April 2019 saw my latest exhibition "The Llanfair Photographer" at the Oriel Strongroom gallery, Llanfair Caereinion.
In 2017 I came across Dr WTR Pryce's book "The Photographer in Rural Wales". It is a fantastic photographic archive of Llanfair Caereinion and surrounding villages, containing photographic images and a wealth of detailed information about the town's history and people.
This inspired me to retake some of the pictures in the book and create them in my unique style.
You could retake any of these pictures now and the scene remains pretty much unchanged since those times. Other photos would be less familiar as the town grew but I reckon that you could photograph any of the locations and the image would be unchanged since the 1950s. It's why we love living here.
For the town pictures in the exhibition I went for a 1950s colourisation, giving a similar feel to the Railway posters of the time.
Then for the Steam locomotive pictures I wanted to highlight the romance of the steam train by emphasing the smoke, the green of the carriage and the red of the locomotive as it steams along, but also I wanted to emphasise how hard and dirty work it is to be a railway worker, hence the dirty treesI
